MONTEZUMA, Iowa — The city of Montezuma has received a $9.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to build the state’s first solar energy microgrid.

Iowa State University played a critical role in securing the grant, with researchers partnering with Montezuma Light & Power to submit the proposal.

The city will still need to pay the remaining $2.4 million cost of the project.

Kevin Kudart, the Superintendent of Montezuma Light & Power, said that the solar microgrid will help keep residents’ electricity rates low.

“It will help us to stabilize rates. That’s our main goal. We’re not going to get rates to go down but hopefully, we can stabilize them for a longer period of time,” Kudart said.
